Amortization

The process of breaking up a loan payback (principal plus interest) into monthly payments over the life of a loan. For example, for a mortgage, amortization spreads the loan across 360 payments (30 years x 12 months) until it is paid off. When you first start making payments, the bulk of your payments will be applied to the interest.
